Nick stayed at Shady Grove for a quick end-of-summer get-away with friends.  This is a County owned campground that is very nicely maintained.  The campground sits on Lake Lanier and 90% of the camp sites have a tremendous view of the lake.  There are two group areas that can accommodate a large gathering and would be fabulous for retreats, family reunions, etc.

Nick camped site #33 and could walk down to an area of the lake that felt like a private beach.

This campground is about 45 minutes away from Downtown Atlanta.  The closest grocery store is about 15 minutes away.  The closest golf course, Hampton Golf Village, is 15 minutes away.  There are several restaurants that deliver nearby.

The unique feature of this campground is that it sits on Lake Lanier.  Almost every campsite has direct access to a sandy beach area that becomes your own private beach and water access.  For land locked Atlantians, access to beach and water is a big plus.

Shady Grove sits at the end of a community and appears tucked away.  You can easily access shopping restaurants and other activities but it will require you to drive anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.  There is an entrance gate that requires you to stop for access.  Lake Lanier is a popular location for locals and this campground’s beach and boat access is for guests only.  There is a small playground area and lots of room for parking at the boat ramp area.  The campground beach is located in a completely separate area from the boat ramp.

What we love about this campground is the unique tiered access that most sites have.  We could park our trailer on the top level.  The middle level has a picnic table and fire pit.  The bottom level is the lake access with the site having a small spit of sand to put chairs on. The sites are heavily wooded and have decent coverage from the sites next to yours.  There is a time limit on the length of stay.  This is great because it truly caters to campers vs full timers.

The downside to this campground is that the activities are next to nothing.  Bring your own fun: bikes, games, balls, corn hole, fishing poles, etc.  The only available activities are swimming in the lake, a volleyball area and fishing.  This campground doesn’t really have areas that are conducive to hiking.  Downtown Atlanta is approximately 35 minutes away with easy access and a straight route.  There is hiking in the North Georgia Mountains nearby (30 minutes) that offers fabulous hiking trails and the start of the Appalachian Trail.

In our opinion, the best way to use this campground is with a group.  There are two group sites that have the best spots on the lake in the campground.  One group site has a large gazebo in the middle with camp sites surrounding it.  This would make an awesome camping weekend retreat for church groups, birthday parties, organized groups, family reunions or just gather a bunch of friends and go camping!  The picture at the top of this post is from one of the group camp sites.

The Bath Houses are older and were not maintained every time Nick used them.  Lighting was poor.  Spiders everywhere.  Smell was not the best.  Bath houses are tough to maintain but these need updating to make it easier to keep them “fresh.”

We recommend this campground with a 2 out 4 rating.  The reason for the lower rating is because the activity level is low and the bathrooms were not in great shape.  If you plan on using this campground as a jumping off place to explore Atlanta and the North Georgia Mountains or have a group, Shady Grove offers the suburbs with a lake.
