Sammons Golf Links is located in Temple Texas and is a public course. When you get to the course the sign at the entrance says “Sammons Park Golf Course”. It must have underwent a name change at some time. The course is 95 years old, very well maintained but does not show its age. Pulling into the parking lot,  I saw something I have never seen at another golf course except at Clemson… a smoker!  They have their own smoker so that they can smoke meat for the clubhouse restaurant. The cost of a round of golf is very affordable and they do not stack up the tee times so close together so you have time to plan your shots on the course.

The clubhouse has a good pro shop with a friendly staff, and a good retail selection in case you forgot to bring something. The best part of the clubhouse (at least to me) is the restaurant. The menu had a good selection of the usual fare, but the best thing was the pulled pork sandwich they offer with meat from their smoker. The restaurant also sells sodas, sport drinks, and beer.

The course has two different personalities. The side of the course on the same side of railroad tracks as the clubhouse, which is mostly flat with lots of water hazards. The other side of the railroad tracks is where the holes have changes in elevation.

My favorite hole on this course was number 8. You park your cart and go up a couple of stairs to get to the tee box. From there, you see that you are standing on top of a concrete dam that creates all the waterways and ponds/lakes on the course. Number 8 is a short par 3 and the green is across the water with no area to land short, left, or right of the green because of water, so they made sure to mark a drop zone.

The greens are my only real complaint with this course. I had many putts that were heading straight for the hole only to miss going in because the ball hit a rough bald spot on the green.

If you are in the Temple, Texas area and looking for a place to play a round of golf, Sammons Golf Links is a good option and value.
